Information and Communication Technology and Development

Overview
Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICTD) is at the heart of our mission. We research how technology can support socioeconomic development and improve the lives of marginalized communities. Our work is grounded in fieldwork and critical theory, questioning assumptions about "development" and designing solutions that are sustainable, appropriate, and owned by the community.

Key Focus Areas

  • Agriculture & Rural Livelihoods: designing information systems that connect farmers to markets, weather data, and expert advice.

  • Digital Health (mHealth): evaluating mobile health interventions that support community health workers and improve maternal and child health outcomes.

  • Education in Low-Resource Settings: creating learning technologies that function effectively in areas with limited internet and electricity.

  • Critical ICTD: analyzing power dynamics in technology projects and advocating for decolonial, participatory approaches to design and implementation.

Our Impact

Our research aims to bridge the gap between technological potential and ground realities, ensuring that digital interventions genuinely improve quality of life and empower the communities they are meant to serve.
